Speedweek Speed week is like a stage race for us crit riders. We don’t race every single day because we have to have some travel days to get to the new location.Like always speedweek starts out with the BIGGEST US crit, ATHENS TWILIGHT! Being the defending champion I had a lot of nerves and put a lot of pressure on myself, but all those nerves went away on race day. SURPRISE!

The morning of the race my girlfriend surprised me and showed up in Athens She was working with Conor and some of my teammates to surprise me on this big day. I was able to relax and take my mind off the race for a bit. Then when we arrived to the race my parents were there to surprise Conor and I. It was very neat to have them at one of the biggest races of the year; it really helps to have support like this in the sport.

The race didn’t go according to plan. With no UHC there this year the race was wide open to opportunities. We were on the lookout for breakaways going early and staying away. There was a very bad crash that neutralized the race for a few laps. As a team we rode great and covered the major moves or had guys work to bring it back but in the end we didn’t get the result to show our strong performance. Then the rest of speedweek we really wanted to take advantage of having the full team there to really work on our lead-outs and really figure out everyone’s strengths. We had some good days with podiums and a few top 5. By the end of the week we really were coming together and showing everyone we are a strong team and we are almost on the top step.

Now we have a little break before Wilmington Grand Prix May 17th. I am currently in Maryland seeing my girlfriend for the week and getting some training and R&R at the beach. It is a very welcomed week off from racing as I have been racing every week since Tucson back in March.

Thanks for reading,
